The difference between SEO and SEM is basically that Search Engine Optimization is a part of 
Search engine Marketing as it is generally known. Both method aim in increasing visibility in search 
engines.

Search Engine optimization is about optimizing your site to get better ranking in the search result 
while SEM goes past SEO. It includes different techniques that can get you more search engine 
visibility like PPC advertising.

definition of SEO so that it is clear to all that what the difference between the two is.

What is SEO?

SEO is the process of optimizing your website with the aim of getting free traffic from search engines.

What is SEM?

In this way, SEM is the marketing process with an objective of getting more visibility in search 
engines either by getting all the more free traffic (SEO) or paid traffic. Through paid search advertising 
you basically purchase advertising space in the search engine results. So instead of trying to rank 
higher and get free traffic you pay to show up  in front of the searches.

Through Google adwords you can get your ads to show up in the Google search result and you pay 
just for the clicks on your advertisements.

This is also the reasons why the entire procedure is called Pay-per-clicks or PPC. Bing and Yahoo 
have a similar system however it not all that fruitful and widely known as Adwords.

Importance of SEM Traffic

SEM traffic is viewed as the most vital source of Internet traffic since it is focused on. It is widely 
accepted that individuals use search engine to discover a solution to a problem, an answer to their 
question or to figure out how to accomplish something.

So when searchers click on a websites from the search result or tap on an advertisement, they are 
more likely to change over. The relevance of the presented websites and advertisements makes 
SEM traffic more significant than any of the other sources.
